As Dave Matthews Band kicks off their huge summer tour - I had the chance to design a poster for their show in my home-state. Based on my love for old certificates, overly-ornate lettering and decorative filigree of all sorts. The Wreath of Red Currants (a plant common in England, not so much on the East Coast) are a symbol of New England’s historic ties to, well, Old England. The tower depicted is none other than the Roxbury Standpipe, located at Fort Hill in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston. Civic architecture throughout New England - most notably the Waterworks and Reservoir variety - have a distinctly fantastical and superfluous quality to their designs to disguise the utility beneath their facade. This invites the imagination to speculate and wonder, filling the air with ‘what-ifs’. Lettering and scripts were carefully crafted and tweaked to evoke late-high Victorian flavor.
